Responsibilities

1. Triage customer service requests by location, urgency, and information/response required.


2. Provide telephone support regarding ocular emergencies, prescription refills, and patient care questions.


3. Communicate with patient services to facilitate proper patient flow for any add on emergencies and verification of insurance for the add on.


4. Resolve customer complaints, issues and concerns by communicating to Leads and Management.


5. Research questions, issues, and concerns as directed by management.


6. Answer incoming customer calls


7. Prioritize and respond appropriately


8. Acquaints all new patients with office procedures to which they will be exposed.


9. Informs patients of the purpose of all tests personally performed, and how the patient will be affected during the tests.


10. Obtains patient history to include chief complaint, history of present illness, past history (ocular and general), family history (ocular and general), and history of allergies and medications.


11. Obtains referring physician information and documented in appropriate fields in Nextgen Electronic Health Record


12. Performs accuratesistent documentation and measurement tasks to include: Visual Acuity, Manual lensometry, Confrontational Visual Fields, Stereo Testing, Evaluation of motility, Pupillary function tests, Color plates, Applanation tonometry, Refractometry, Angle assessment, Dilation of pupils, Visual field testing, Pachymetry, Corneal topography, Optic nerve scanning (i.e. OCT, HRT, Gdx).


13. Other tasks specific to the physician's needs as a result of new technologies


14. Perform hearing screenings and assure proper documentation is entered in database and fee slip.


15. Report on Meaningful Use Measures


16. Provides back-up to the ophthalmic photographer regarding fundus, exterior and anterior segment photographs.


17. Performs duties consistent with ophthalmic writer/scribe. Send referral letters to all referring physician and Primary Care Physician.


18. Assists physician with laser procedures.


19. Assists physician with minor surgery, maintaining practice standards of sterile technique and infection control.


20. Determines which patient should be taken next from the waiting room to have testing initiated.


21. Escorts all patients from the waiting room for data collection.


22. Advises patients as to who will see them following testing and makes patients comfortable during wait.


23. Maintains a smooth flow of patients to the physician, altering the test sequence as required. 24. Maintain close watch to physician schedule for any patients that might have been skipped (advise front desk if occurs) and advise patients in waiting room if physician is delayed.


25. Report any complaints or issues to Lead Ophthalmic Tech.


26. Troubleshoot instruments as necessary.


27. Replace blubs.


28. Checks connections.


29. Performs archiving functions according to manufacturer recommendations.


30. Performs autoclaving and maintenance of instrument sterility.


31. Reports continued difficulty to Lead Ophthalmic Technician.


32. Maintain cleanliness in exam and procedure rooms.

34. Perform other duties as required. OTHER REQUIREMENTS: 1. Support other locations when shortages occur to include sub-specialty teams and VA Eye Clinic if needed.

Qualifications


  • Education: 

    • High school diploma or equivalent.

    • Some college preferred.

    • Valid proof of certification as an ophthalmic assistant.



  • Prior Experience:

  • Two to five years experience as a certified ophthalmic assistant.

  • Working knowledge of all aspects regarding ophthalmic care.

  • Knowledgeable of insurance and referrals

  • Preferred knowledge of electronic health record Skills and Proficiencies: 

    • Demonstrated, advanced comprehension of the ophthalmic assistant skills as outlined by the Joint Commission on Allied Health Personnel in Ophthalmology (JCAHPO)

    • Basic understanding of optics and the ability to perform refractometry.

    • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.

    • Empathetic personality with concern for patient needs.

    • Strong organization with attention to detail.

    • Ability to work as a team member.

    • Demonstrated comprehension of the principles of optics, refraction, and contact lenses.

    • Demonstrated ability to perform comprehensive work ups on three patients per hour.

    • Demonstrated computer literacy.
